自己紹介

Yoshiaki Shibata was born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in 1965. After receiving a master’s degree in electronics from Osaka University, he joined Sony Corporation Research Center in 1991, starting his carrier as a researcher in the semiconductor field. In 1996, he moved to the Information Technology related R&D division where he was engaged in the video over Internet as well as the video compression related technology.
In 1998, he participated in the MPEG-7 standardization activity, where he was in charge of establishing the MPEG-7 metadata schema as the WG chair, worked also as a project editor for ISO/IEC 15938-5 and co-chair of the MPEG-7 Japan National Body.
Since 2001, Shibata has started working in the field of broadcast and professional audiovisual products, where initially he made significant contribution to the UMID specification update (SMPTE 330M/RP 205) as well as the EssenceMark(TM) development and their promotion. In 2002, he joined the XDCAM(TM)/Professional Disc development project, where he played a crucial role in the development of the metadata part of the products, resulted in applying for more than forty patents of metadata related technology, more than half of which have been already made granted.
Shibata’s broad experiences also include a visiting scientist at University of Illinois (1997-1998), the patent development and promotion task force chair at Sony Japan, and a business strategic planning staff at Sony Group Headquarter.
In the end of 2010, Shibata has left Sony Corporation to make a trial to be the Japan’s first freelance consultant for the media and metadata technology in the M&E industry. Then, following a one-year preparation period, he founded metaFrontier.jp, LLC in Jan. 2012.
Shibata is a member of SMPTE, AMWA, ITE and IPSJ.
